This is a book about rescues along the coast by surf men who rowed small wooden boats into mountainous waves, often in bitterly cold weather, because there were people in danger of dying. Here are their stories of dedication to a human cause: that others might live. Along an entire coast small lifesaving stations had surfboats and breeches buoy where fearless men of the sea rowed into storms and brought to safety those in shipwrecks. In the years after the American Revolution the loss of live and property to wrecks was so heavy that the Massachusetts Humane Society was formed in Boston as a volunteer group that rescued sailors and passengers from peril; and organization that was the model for the United State Life-saving Service.
