Orrin C. Hudson is the founder of Be Someone, Inc., a nonprofit organization where the main focus is to teach children to think by providing them with a structured way to learn how to use their minds through chess. Chess helps develop other skills as well, such as patience, planning, concentration and following rules. It teaches that there are consequences for any action taken. It reinforces lessons of responsibility. It also teaches that winning isn't everything; sometimes losing can be an important instrument for improvement. This organization is geared towards motivating children as well as adults to "Be Someone." Orrin grew up in public housing in Birmingham, Alabama and is the seventh of thirteen children. He learned the importance of sharing at a very early age and has been determined ever since to make a difference by inspiring others. His passion to help children was formed very early in life. Helping others gives him pleasure. Knowing he can make a difference in someone's life brings him great satisfaction. After graduating from high school Orrin worked as an assistant sales manager for Kinney Shoes. He worked for Kinney's six years before deciding to become an Alabama State Trooper. He served the state of Alabama as a trooper for six years, and decided to start his own automobile business. Orrin operated his automobile business successfully for about 10 years, but decided to devote more of his time to speaking to children and teaching children how to play chess. He feels chess teaches children key fundamentals of life, which can help improve their academics and make them well-rounded and successful people. Orrin's dream is to instill self-esteem in our children, teach them to think, and to develop their minds in all areas. He makes them understand and fully aware of the message of "Be Someone": Everything Is possible If You Simply Apply Yourself. Orrin believes children are our future! They hold the keys to the future success of our society. Orrin is currently attending St. Stephen Church in Decatur, whose Pastor is Mr. Clifford A. Bahlinger. Orrin turned his life over to Christ in 1979, but it wasn't until 1986 that he realized the true meaning of Christ. His strong faith and the directions he receives from God’s Word are of great inspiration and support to him to do the work for our children through his organization Be Someone”. The inspirational instruments Orrin teaches are simple fundamental keys of how to become successful. He developed this idea after winning two citywide chess championships back-to back. Orrin accomplished his success after having been considered the lowest seed both times.
