"[T]he more straightforward and data-intensive aspects of the whole are dealt with best in the present collection. The demographers Sergio DellaPergola and U.O. Schmelz, with hard(ish) facts to set out and analyze, do very well indeed. Mordechai Altschuler's learned summing-up of the travails of Russian Jewry, once as firmly the center of the Jewish world in modern times as ever there was one, but beaten almost to the death, and morally and culturally emasculated by seventy years of Soviet rule, is a model of its kind. Geoffrey Alderman's article on "Jewish Political Attitudes and Voting Patterns in England 1945-97" and the editor's own rather grim run-through of "Anti-Semitism after 1945" can hardly be bettered. The collection succeeds best, that is to say, where there is something of the year-book about it, where the contributions are authoritative, but also essentially informative.Wistrich, Robert S. is the author of 'Terms of Survival The Jewish World Since 1945', published 1995 under ISBN 9780415100564 and ISBN 0415100569.
