The last book in the Educational Series focuses on public education as seen through the eyes of a politician and former educator. Given the latest political involvement in education by the Bush administration's "No Child Left Behind" one has to wonder why politicians have always used public education as a call-to-arms for the American people. After all, given the failure of the Federal Government to properly fund education and the abysmal record of the Federal Department of Education, it would seem that the individual states with the help of the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers are frankly doing a better job in improving public education. Given the involvement of other educationally oriented organizations and the many parent groups that support the public schools, public education is doing its job quite effectively without the help of the Federal Government and the politicians thank you. Public education needs to be void of politicians, the political process and that includes Boards of Education who play politics rather than set policy. The Federal Government and politicians need to focus on rebuilding the cities whose facilities have fallen into a state of disrepair, where the local tax base cannot support quality services or pay equivalent professional salaries and children lack parental guidance and support at home. These public schools need to be funded more adequately by the Federal Government through the State. The Federal Government creating flash-in-the-pan programs and demanding unrealistic performance expectations without first addressing numerous systemic problems is getting public education nowhere in these areas. The success of public education is critical in this country considering the investment that has been made in facilities, land, equipment and major plants. For decades when education was left to the States and more specifically to professional educators, the success rate was quite impressive. This book will address what is specifically needed to ensure parity in public education for all of America's children no matter where they live.Luongo, Gerald J. is the author of 'Public Education Is Working : Results Outweight the Critic's Lament', published 2004 under ISBN 9780976341840 and ISBN 0976341840.
