This biennial report is the 10th in a series of national water quality assessments published since 1975 by the EPA. Based on surveys conducted by the States, this report indicates that, while most of the Nation's surveyed waters are of good quality, about 40% of the Nation's surveyed rivers, lakes, & estuaries are too polluted for basic uses, such as fishing or swimming. According to the States, the most commonly reported problem in impaired waters is polluted runoff from agricultural lands & urban streets. Pollutants include nutrients, siltation, & bacteria. Agriculture is the leading source of pollution in rivers & lakes, & ranks in the top three sources in estuaries. Illustrated with graphs, tables, maps & B&W photos.Browner, Carol M. is the author of 'National Water Quality Inventory 1994 Report to Congress' with ISBN 9780756728748 and ISBN 0756728746.
