SUMMARY

About Microsoft Office and This Book Microsoft Office (MS Office) is available for both Windows and Macintosh computers. The current Windows version isMicrosoft Office XP . If the programs are bought separately, it is equivalent to version 2002--Word 2002, Excel 2002, or PowerPoint 2002. The current Macintosh versions areMicrosoft Office 2001 for MacOS 9.x or earlier, andMicrosoft Office v.X TMfor MacOS X. This book is designed to provide tutorials to use the MS Office programs in the Windows and Macintosh platforms--MS Office XP, 2001 and v.X. MS Office has different collections of programs between the Windows and Macintosh versions. Also within the Windows versions the included programs are different. The common denominator is Microsoft Word , Microsoft Excel , and Microsoft PowerPoint . Therefore, the tutorials in this book are developed for these programs. More information about MS Office can be found in Chapter 1, "Microsoft Office in Windows and Macintosh." Features of This Book This book provides step-by-step tutorial lessons to enhance the hands-on skills of using the common application programs of MS Office and to develop ideas for integrating the programs into teaching and learning. There are six chapters: Chapter 1 "Microsoft Office in Windows and Macintosh" Chapter 2 "Microsoft Word: The Word Processing Tool" Chapter 3 "Graphic Tools and Page Design in Microsoft Office" Chapter 4 "Microsoft Excel: The Spreadsheet Tool" Chapter 5 "Microsoft PowerPoint: The Presentation Tool" Chapter 6 "Database Techniques Using-Excel" All the chapters can be used on both Windows (MS Office XP) and Macintosh (MS Office 2001 and v.X) to achieve the same tasks. MS Office programs--Word, Excel, and PowerPoint--are cross-platform. Therefore, the files can be used between the Windows and Macintosh versions. At the same time, unlike many other application programs, the MS Office programs are not updated simultaneously for the Windows and Macintosh versions. Therefore, they are not completely identical. In cases where minor differences exist, the instruction is specified for the platforms. A chapter is organized with the following sections: Getting Started. As an introduction to the chapter, Getting Started provides the features of the program, its application in teaching and learning, and the chapter overview. Hands-on Activities. As the major section of the chapter, the step-by-step hands-on tutorials are to learn how to use the program. There are two to five activities in each chapter. WIN/MAC:When a different instruction is required between the Windows and Macintosh versions, it is indicated by the corresponding icon. CD:This icon indicates that there are accompanying files on the CD. For a description of this CD, refer to the next section titled "Supplement: Accompanying CD." It is always challenging to develop hands-on activities to meet all participants' needs, as their beginning proficiency level varies. Advanced participants may skip some of the hands-on activities. For example, in Chapter 2, "Microsoft Word: The Word Processing Tool," they may skip the first one or two activities. In Chapter 5, "Microsoft PowerPoint: The Presentation Tool," they may skip the first activity if they have created a PowerPoint presentation before. Projects. At the end of each hands-on activity, there is a project to apply what was covered in the activity. Projects may also be used to test the hands-on activity. Integration with Other Programs. After the series of hands-on activities and projects, this short section considers how to integrate theShinn, E.
