A young adult named Bill Chase grew up in an orphanage after his parents were killed in a car accident. After graduating from high school, he got a job at a local newspaper where he organized trips for home delivery carriers who earned enough points to win trips to Hoover Dam, Catalina Island, and many other excursions. These provided a change for the carriers to pull off shenanigans that gave them fun but caused problems for Bill and Hal. One of the carriers named Johnny, who lost his parents when their car was stolen with Johnny in it as a baby, was living an unhappy life in various foster homes, and he provided Bill with a lot of help on the trips.
