HEART OF THE GODS is an autobiographical account of the life of a contemporary artist/writer, Sara Lutrecia Thomas Needham from her early days growing up on a plantation in South Carolina through various family relationships, educational pursuits & finally a move to New York City to study at the Art Students League. She had already set up her first studio before she met her husband. We discover the dynamics of an evolving artist reflected in her life. After her marriage & move to Woodstock, she becomes trapped in a violent relationship with a dangerously abusive husband. Through a series of life threatening injuries, she realizes the helplessness of her situation & her ultimate need to escape. She succeeds in leaving her husband & starting a new life. In her new studio, she continues her art work--painting, writing & researching the ancient gods carved in stone that looked like her. Carvings in stone of the gods. The book includes both photographs of the author & photographs of several different statues found in different countries.
