Here is a very personal account of "ideas for living" as taken from the pen of one of our country's great organizational leaders, J. Henry Smith. Born & raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, son of an itinerant Methodist minister, J. Henry Smith graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in mathematics. He joined Equitable Life Assurance Society as an actuary in 1931. Retired in 1965 as Chairman of the Board of Equitable after leading the company not only to successful new insurance offerings, but also into community organizations, equal opportunity areas & corporate social responsibility. After retirement he served as Human Resources Commissioner of New York City. During his lifetime he served 22 organizations, providing leadership & "Great Ideas for Living" for thousands of people, especially his family. When Henry Smith died in 1990, his son, with help from the whole family, found, studied & edited the "ideas" of this business, community & family leader. The title comes from an undelivered, handwritten letter to his son, Wendell M. Smith, written some 40 years ago. "His exceptional success in business has been due not only to financial acumen, but also to a philosophy of life that considers the benefit of others more important than the bottom line." - Norman Vincent Peale. Enjoy the fun of discovery that the editor & his family had reviewing J. Henry Smith's "ideas" following the passing of this simple yet effective leader.
