Robert Lowell was born in Boston in 1917. He attended Harvard University and Kenyon College, where he received his B.A. in 1940. Lowell was the dominant poetic voice of his era, the renowned and controversial author of many books of poems, plays, and translations, famously a conscientious objector during World War II, and a forceful opponent of America's involvement in Vietnam. His ongoing interrogation of his family legacy, his personal struggle with manic depression, and his mastery of the tradition of English poetry formed the ground-breaking, autobiographical foundation of Life Studies (1959) and the books that followed it, including For the Union Dead (1964), Near the Ocean (1967), History (1973), and Day by Day (1977). Robert Lowell died in New York City in 1977. His Collected Prose was published in 1987.
