Carolyn Kizer was born in Spokane, Washington, was educated at Sarah Lawrence College, and was a Fellow of the Chinese Government in Comparative Literature at Columbia University, subsequently living in Nationalist China for a year. In 1959, she founded Poetry Northwest, serving as its editor until 1965.
