James H. Critchfield served as a U.S. Army officer in Europe during World War II, commanding the 2d Battalion of the 141st Infantry, 36th Division, in a final assault across France and Germany in 1944. His numerous military awards include a Silver Star and the Croix de Guerre. He joined the CIA in 1948 and was the principal U.S. officer responsible for overseeing the creation of a new German intelligence service. He then served as chief of the Eastern European, Near East, and South Asia divisions of the CIA and later as a national intelligence officer for energy. From 1973 to 1974, during the oil shortage crisis, he was an energy planner at the White House. His CIA honors include the Distinguished Intelligence Medal and the Trailblazer Award After retirement from the CIA, Critchfield became president of an energy and water company, providing engineering services in the Persian Gulf, and continued as a consultant in the Middle East until 1988.
