Benkyo Tamaoki is the pen name of Toshihiko Sumi, born 1967. Discovering the Dead Kennedys, he became a punk guitarist in school and was inspired by Henry Rollins to begin to tattoo himself. He spent the late 1980s in the drug and rock scenes of Los Angeles and San Francisco, and only in 1990 drew his first, self-published comic. All completely untrue; he was born in 1973 and has pretty girl anime posters all over his walls. But the important thing is that that's the life he wanted to have lived. It's completely true that Tamaoki's wasted take on cute has made him one of the true underground manga stylists of the last ten years, even piercing the mainstream with his Lover's Play, released through publishing giant Kodansha. Yet Tamaoki, who styled himself "Pornostar" before the T-shirt ever came out, continues to work as a professional artist of pornographic manga.
