1890. Jacques de Vitry studied theology at Paris and was ordained as a priest. He preached first in favor of the crusade against the Albigenses. The following year he led a large army of crusaders to the siege of Toulouse. He next preached a crusade against the Saracens. He was then elected bishop of Acre, approved by the Pope and consecrated. Later he again played a prominent role in the crusade; wrote his well known historical work; resigned his bishopric, and devoted himself again to preaching the crusade against the Albigenses; was made a cardinal, and bishop of Tusculum; and finally, was elected patriarch of Jerusalem.
