Running Out of Time

Margaret Peterson Haddix writes: I have always loved and been fascinated by restored historical villages. I first thought of writing about a historical village where all the tourists are hidden while I was working on a newspaper article about Conner Prairie, a living history museum in Indiana. I interviewed several employees there who spent their workdays acting as though they lived in the past. Some of them admitted, when no tourists were around, sometimes they nearly forgot that it wasn't the nineteenth century. I began to wonder what it would be like if someone grew up in a place like that, and truly didn't know the modern world existed. I grew up on a farm outside Washington Court House, Ohio, and graduated from Miami University with degrees in creative writing, journalism, and history. I've worked as a copy editor for the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, a reporter for the Indianapolis News, and an instructor at the Danville Area Community College in Illinois.
