Ernst Benz (1907-1978) was professor of Church History at the University of Marburg. In 1953, he joined the Eranos Conference at Ascona, Switzerland, a prestigious forum for religion and philosophy since 1933, whose regular participants included Buber, Jung, Corbin, Scholem, Eliade, and Suzuki, among others.
