The first edition of Mental Health in a Multi-Ethnic Society, published in 1995, was well received as a handbook for professionals and students working in the mental health field. It reflected the change from institution-based psychiatry to mental health care based in the community, and provided a guide constructive guide to good practice within a multi-ethnic society. This new edition will continue to provide advice and guidance on race, culture and the strategic difficulties facing service providers. It will also, however, reflect the many changes in the services developed in the UK over the last 10 years (e.g. provision for refugees, new mental health projects for black and minority ethnic communities), as well as the changes in the needs of the community. Suman Fernando has taken on board a new co-editor, Frank Keating, and together they plan to radically overhaul the book. While the book will retain its three-part structure, the third part of the book (previously entitled 'seeking change') will be expanded to become 'Making it Happen', reflecting the ethnic-specific projects that are now available (and weren't ten years ago) and looking to the services of the future. This new edition should ensure that the book remains an essential purchase for mental health professionals.Fernando, Suman is the author of 'Mental Health in a Multi-Ethnic Society A Multi-Disciplinary Handbook' with ISBN 9780415105378 and ISBN 0415105374.
