Joseph Roth was born in 1894 in what is now eastern Austria. He worked as a journalist in Vienna and Berlin until Hitler's rise to power, and is the author of such classic novels as The Radetzky March and The Emperor's Tomb. He died in Paris in 1939 Michael Hofmann is regarded as one of the world's foremost translators of works from German to English.
