German merchants emerged as influential commercial partners of the Portuguese in the sixteenth century. Trade in spices and precious metals was not the only enterprise they pursued in India. They also collected precious stones and ventured far into the interior of the country. The present study details these activities. Not all of the Germans coming to India were merchants. Many were also soldiers, among them artillerists (bombardeiros), with skills not yet acquired by the Portuguese military. News about India that German merchants and soldiers conveyed to their home country contributed to the increase of German knowledge of the world.Malekandathil, Pius is the author of 'Germans, the Portuguese and India' with ISBN 9783825843502 and ISBN 3825843505.
