For more than forty years, world-renowned artist Alan Flattmann has used pastels to capture the unique architecture and the changing scene in New Orleansi most historic neighborhood. In this, the first published collection of his work, over 120 color images portray landmarks like the French Market, St. Louis Cathedral, and Galatoireis Restaurant. About the contributors Alan Flattmann was born in New Orleans in 1946 and studied at the McCrady Art School on a New Orleans Art Association scholarship. His 1987 publication, The Art of Pastel Painting , is a standard textbook for pastel techniques. Alan Flattmann has an international reputation and has received many major awards, including the 1996 American Artist Art Masters Award for pastels. In 1991, Mr. Flattmann was awarded the Master Pastelist distinction by the Pastel Society of America. He has also been listed in Whois Who in American Art since 1981. His work can be found in hundreds of private and corporate collections, such as the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Oklahoma Art Center, Mississippi Museum of Art, and Lauren Rogers Museum of Art. Bryant Galleries, located in New Orleans and Jackson, Mississippi, are the exclusive agents for his work. New Orleans native John R. Kemp received his bacheloris and masteris degrees in history from Loyola University and the University of Southern Mississippi, respectively. Formerly a staff writer for the New Orleans Times-Picayune , he has contributed to several publications, including Southern Accents , Fodoris , Time Out Guides , Louisiana Life , ARTNews , and Art & Antiques . He also covers the New Orleans visual-arts scene for the local public television channelis weekly entertainment show, Steppini Out . Currently, Mr. Kemp is an associate director at the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. E. John Bullard is the Montine McDaniel Freeman Director of the New Orleans Museum of Art.
