SUMMARY

Dan Madsen was born just north of San Francisco in Sausalito, California, where Liberty ships and tankers were built during World War II. His interest in the Navy was sparked when, at the age of nine, he watched the USS New Jersey glide beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, home from her Vietnam tour. He earned a bachelor's degree in communications from California State University, Sacramento, in 1983 Madsen's first book, Forgotten Fleet: The Mothball Navy, was published by the Naval Institute Press in 1999. He is currently writing a book about veterans returning to the United States after World War II.
