SUMMARY

Margaret Naumberg, ATR, HLM, is an internationally recognized figure in the field of art therapy, having pioneered the use of art expression as a therapeutic tool over fifty years ago. Her approach is psychoanalytic, recognizing that man's fundamental thoughts & feelings are derived from the unconscious & often reach expression in images rather than words. Pictorial images can be used to facilitate the expression of inner conflicts in symbolic form, speeding the therapeutic process. In this work, three case histories of emotionally disturbed women illustrate the ways in which the art therapy process functions in the treatment of depression, ulcers, & alcoholism. The pictures created by these patients illustrate the application of transference, identification & free association in relation to the spontaneous pictures created during treatment. A concise overview of dynamically oriented art therapy is presented in the Introduction. Important questions about the nature & purpose of art therapy are answered in a direct & systematic way. An important section is devoted to the significance of symbolism & its vital contribution to art therapy. A practicing psychotherapist & author of four books, Naumburg was also the founder of the progressive Walden School in New York.Naumburg, Margaret is the author of 'Dynamically Oriented Art Therapy Its Principles and Practice' with ISBN 9780961330910 and ISBN 0961330910.
