Born in Virginia in 1873, Willa Cather spent her early years on a farm in Back Creek Valley. She moved with her family to Nebraska in the 1880s and lived near and in Red Cloud, a small frontier village. Early on, she showed a love of reading and nature. A dedicated student, Cather had her graduation speech published in a local paper when she finished high school. After graduating from college, she worked as a journalist and a teacher. Later on, her work caught the attention of the publisher of McClure's Magazine. He published her first collection of short stories and later asked her to work on the magazine with him. Cather published her first novel, Alexander's Bridge, in 1912 and began to devote more of her time to her fiction. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923 for her novel One of Ours. Some of her most popular works include O Pioneers! and My Antonia, both set on the Nebraska frontier.
