SUMMARY

The regeneration of the economies and societies of urban areas in the UK and around the world has become an increasingly important issue amongst governments, populations and interested researchers. This growing concern has been a result of the negative impacts of the decline of cities since the collapse of manufacturing industry and the loss of employment and populations from urban areas. A range of approaches to tackle this problem have been taken over many decades to attempt to regenerate towns and cities throughout the UK.This book places the historical and contemporary regeneration agenda in context. Section one sets up the conceptual and policy framework for urban regeneration in the UK. The second traces policies that have been adopted by national government to influence the social, economic and physical development of cities. In this section, detailed consideration is given to late nineteenth century and early twentieth century municipal intervention, early town and country planning initiatives, area-based urban policies of the late 1960s and early 1970s, late 1970s inner city policies, entrepreneurial regeneration in the 1980s, the rise of competition and community in urban policy in the 1990s and New Labour's brand of urban policy since the late 1990s.Section three of the book illustrates the policies and strategies that have been pursued by cities themselves, focusing particularly on improving economic competitiveness and tackling social disadvantage and exclusion. These include the following thematic areas of urban regeneration: urban competitiveness new forms of urban governance partnership, financing and delivery mechanisms urban sustainability city centre retail and office-led regeneration housing-led regeneration and gentrification leisure and cultural regeneration community and regeneration regenerating suburban and exurban areas of cities.A final section summarises the key issues and debates facing urban regeneration and speculates upon future directions. The book provides a comprehensive and critical synthesis of urban regeneration in the UK, as well as adding new ideas drawn from the author's own research. It blends the approaches taken by central government programmes and cities themselves in the regeneration process. All the latest ideas and examples from across disciplines and across the UK's urban areas are illustrated to give a rich, comprehensive and stimulating synthesis that will fill a significant gap in the current literature on regeneration.Andrew Tallon is the author of 'Urban Regeneration in the UK', published 2009 under ISBN 9780415425964 and ISBN 0415425964.
