SUMMARY

In this, the first volume of the trilogy set in Middle-Earth, as was The Hobbit (1938), Frodo Baggins inherits a magic ring from his uncle Bilbo and begins a journey to protect it from the evil powers who seek it. In The Two Towers (orig. British pub. 1954; U.S. 1955; Houghton, 1967; Ballantine, 1985, pap.), Frodo and Sam take the ring to the borders of the Dark Kingdom while the members of the Company of the Ring battle the wizard Saruman and his goblin army. In The Return of the King (orig. British and U.S. pub. 1955; Houghton, 1967; Ballantine, 1985, pap.) Frodo and Sam bring the Ring to Mount Doom where it is destroyed to help the forces of good win their struggle against the Dark Lord. The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses from "The Red Book" (1962, 1963, 1991) is a related work. Tolkien's son, Christopher Tolkien, has edited seven volumes of previously unpublished legends about the history of Middle-Earth: The Silmarillion (1979), Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth (1980, 1982; Mythopoetic Fantasy Award, 1981), The Book of Lost Tales (1983, 1984, 1986), The Book of Lost Tales, Volume 2 (1984), The Lays of the Beleriad (1985), The Shaping of Middle-Earth: The Quenta, the Ambrakanta, and the Annals (1986), and The Treason of Isengard (1989).
