Dugongs (sometimes called sea cows) are herbivorous marine mammals which are found in shallow, tropical waters throughout the Indo-Pacific region. They are the only extant species in the Family Dugongidae, and are listed as vulnerable to global extinction by the World Conservation Union. This report reviews the status of the dugong for 37 countries and territories in its known range, and contains information on distribution, threatening processes, existing conservation initiatives, legislation and research.
