James Warren has held positions at Australian National University, Yale University and as a Professorial Research Fellow at the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies. Kyoto University and the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. He is a member of the Asia Research Centre, Murdoch University and a Research Associate of The Indian Ocean World Centre. McGill University. He has been awarded grants by the Social Science Research Council and the Australia Research Council and the Australia Research Council and is a Fellow of The Australian Academy of the Humanities. In 2003, Professor Warren was awarded the Centenary Medal of Australia for service to Australian society and the Humanites in the study of Ethnohistory. He Leaches units on the social history of Southeast Asia; researching and writing history in a trans-disciplinary context; and on colonialism, literature and social context.
