SUMMARY

This publication, edited by Janez Hofler, brings together the papers presented at the international symposium on the sculptor Francesco Robba which was held in October 1998 by the Department of Art History of the University of Ljubljana on the 300th anniversary of Robba's birth. Since the artist was Venetian by birth, and since his oeuvre is an integral part of late Baroque Venetian sculpture, the symposium focused not only on Robba's personality and work but also provided a forum for discussion of fundamental issues of Venetian sculpture and general aspects of cultural exchange between Italy and Central Europe during Robba's lifetime. Several papers presented at the symposium also examine the significant position of Ljubljana and the Austrian province of Carniola, Robba's second home, in the cultural and historical map of Central Europe, and more precisely, their intermediary role in the reception, affirmation and diffusion of the artistic forms and tastes of the Italian Baroque period. Contributors include Marijan Smolik, Nace Sumi, Sergej Vriser, Andrea Andanti, Segej Androssov, Ivo Babic, Giuseppe Bergamini, Alan Phipps Darr, Doris Baricevic, Massimo de Grassi, Monica De Vincenti, Paolo Goi, Simone Guerreiro, Barbara Jaki, Matej Klemencic, Stanko Kokole, Douglas Lewis, Vladimir Markovic, Frank Martin, Giuseppe Pavanello, Paola Rossi and Radoslav Tomic. Several of the papers are presented in English and several are in Italian.Hofler, Janez is the author of 'Francesco Robba and 18th Century Venetian Sculpture', published 2000 under ISBN 9789612091606 and ISBN 9612091609.
