Military Readiness : Dod Needs to Identify and Address Gaps and Potential Risks in Programstrategies and Funding Priorities for Selected Equipment

With continued heavy military involvement in operations in Iraq & Afghanistan, the DoD is spending billions of dollars sustaining or replacing its inventory of key equipment items while also planning to spend billions of dollars to develop & procure new systems to transform the dept.'s warfighting capabilities. A red, yellow, green assessment framework was developed to: (1) assess the condition of 30 selected equipment items from across the 4 military services; & (2) determine the extent to which DoD has identified near- & long-term program strategies & funding plans to ensure that these items can meet defense requirements. These items were selected based on input from the military services & congressional committees.
