Foot and Mouth disease In early 2001 Britain's farmers endured a severe outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease. The disease, which principally affects sheep and cattle, does not pose a threat to humans, but represents a serious danger to the country's farming and food and livestock markets. In order to prevent its spread, much of the countryside was closed. Fortunately, rural England is now largely back to normal and welcoming visitors once again. Sadly, this has put a strain on farming community and some attractions have been forced to close.
