Prior to World war II, with a Jewish population of over 2000,000 people, including the city of Vilnius, Lithuania was the home to the second largest Jewish community in Europe. June 22, 1941, Lithuania became the first country occupied by Germany in its war against the Soviet Union. Within days of this occupation, the mass murder of the Jewish population began. In this remarkable and well documented book, Sara Ginaite-Rubinson recounts the harrowing story of her experiences in the Kaunas Ghetto, her efforts at survival, her involvement with the underground resistance and with the partisans, her 'march' towards Vilnius and its liberation. Sara Ginaite-Rubinson did not leave Lithuania after the war. She remained, became a professor at the University and was deeply involved in Lithuanian life under the Soviet Union. She finally emigrated to Canada in the late eighties to join her daughter. The importance of this book is that it documents from the inside the life of the Kaunas Ghetto and the trials and tribulations, as well as the triumphs of the resistance and the partisans. Upon publication of this book in Lithuanian, Sara Ginaite-Rubinson was recognized as making an important contribution to Holocaust literature and to the history of Lithiania.Ginaite-Rubinson, Sara is the author of 'Resistance and Survival The Jewish Community in Kaunas, Lituania, 1941-1944' with ISBN 9780889628168 and ISBN 0889628165.
