This report is about the Michoacan earthquake of September 19, 1985, which was one of the most damaging earthquakes ever to have occurred in North America: thousands died, tens of thousands were injured, damage was in the trillions of pesos, and the social and economic disruption was immeasurable. The majority of the total losses occurred in a 6-km square area of Mexico City, where site conditions and buildings were particularly sensitive.
