This fictional story, based on Southern Gullah folklore, tells the tragic tale of an antebellum Charleston woman of mixed ancestry who had a daughter by a white lover and sold her soul for her daughter's happiness. According to Gullah superstitions, Margot bargained with the devil to make her daughter's skin lighter, and paid the price, as her own skin grew darker and darker until finally, she died. When author John Bennett first told this tale to a group of Southern women in 1908, they were shocked and appalled and he was cast out of society. The story was finally published in 1921 to critical acclaim, and is reprinted here with, for the first time, Bennett's intended preface and appendix. This new edition also contains a new introduction by Charleston novelist, historian and Bennett biographer Harlan Greene.John Bennett is the author of 'Madame Margot: A Grotesque Legend of Old Charleston', published 2004 under ISBN 9781596290136 and ISBN 1596290137.
