Long-Range Air Transport of Dioxin from North American Sources to Ecologically Vulnerable Receptors in Nunavut, Arctic Canada

While most of us picture the Arctic as a snowy wilderness, sparsely peopled & unpolluted, it is actually on the receiving end of emissions from sources far to the south that are transported over long distances by the prevailing air currents. This study models on a continental scale the rates of deposition of airborne dioxin in the Canadian polar territory of Nunavut, which is esp. vulnerable to the long-range air transport of dioxin, & to identify the major contributing N. Amer. sources. Dioxin enters the land & marine food chains through the air & thus into humans at high levels through the foods they eat. Remedial measures must be directed at the sources that emit dioxin into the air.
