The papers compiled in this special issue of Social Research, originally presented at a conference organized at the New School University, were written with the expectation that an open discussion among scientists and scholars might help to place outbreak of AIDS in perspective by considering it in the context of the social history of past lethal epidemics. Through focusing attention on the many ways in which diseases are and have been both biologically and socially defined these papers strive to lead the way to a calmer and more effective public response to the problem. This special issue illustrates how much there is to be learned from a colloquy among scientists, social scientists, and philosophers, all of whom are concerned with these common problems. Papers address the definition and control of disease, the relationship between science and health, case histories, and moral dilemmas regarding people’s notions of diseases.Mack, Arien is the author of 'In Time of Plague : Social Research: an International Quarterly of the Social Sciences: the History and Social Consequences of Lethal Epidemic Disease', published 1988 under ISBN 9781933481302 and ISBN 1933481307.
