SUMMARY

The middle decades of the 19th century were remarkable years in Cuba, a time of slave conspiracies & annexationist plots, of filibustering invasions from without & colonial insurrection from within, years of economic expansion, & of political intrigue. In the U.S. nothing seemed more destined than the annexation of Cuba. Talk of annexation brought Cuba to the attention of the larger public in the U.S. The inauguration of scheduled steamship service played an important part in the expansion of travel. Joseph J. Dimock, a mercantile agent, married Isadora DeWolf in 1857, whose family was established in the Cuban sugar industry. Dimock's trip to Cuba involved bus. transactions on the island. His diary of the trip, published here, spans Feb. & March 1859.Perez, Louis A. is the author of 'Impressions of Cuba in the Nineteenth Century The Travel Diary of Joseph J. Dimock', published 1998 under ISBN 9780756786793 and ISBN 0756786797.
