SUMMARY

This a saga, not just a story, about a heroic young woman who survives degradation, servitude and humiliation due to circumstances beyond her control. How she endures and eventually triumphs with perseverance is a tribute to her courage and strength. It is 1920, a milestone of liberation and equality for American women. Yet, for Freya Heimgard, who is unable to deny the bond of blood and familial duty, the right to vote and what it implies is meaningless. Shel must relinquish the independence and love she has found in San Francisco, yield to the imploring letters from her father, and return to the farm in Minnesota. Although it is to be only a six-month mission, she is resentful; but she feels an obligation to her doting father, and to her handicapped twin brother. That she is willing and able to fulfill this obligation is obvious. She is reluctant, however, to confront her cold, domineering mother, be her surrogate, and to be subservient to four other brothers, two older and two younger. There are occult episodes throughout which we, being mere human beings, cannot comprehend. Mystery escalates the suspense within the Heimgard household. In rural isolation, Freya copes with hardship, disappointment and loneliness. Eventually, she seizes the initiative to shape her own destiny. The quality of her life improves, but she has accepted being a spinster in long years ahead. It is 1928. Unexpectedly, a man appears in her life, a stranger from a far away land who pierces, then destroys, the shell of her reserve. But, having regained a different kind of independence, she is determined never again to be subjected to male dominance. With compassion and respect, he nurtures her dormant ability to love. The darkness and futility of the past dissipate, replaced by a bright future.Miller, Jerome is the author of 'Freya's Saga' with ISBN 9780595188529 and ISBN 0595188524.
