SUMMARY

A biography of Lt. Lyman S. Kidder, 2nd U.S. Cavalry, who was massacred by a Sioux & Cheyenne war party while attempting to deliver dispatches to General George Armstrong Custer in the summer of 1867. Kidder spent four years in the Army during the Civil War, three years fighting the Confederates & a year fighting Indians on the Western Frontier during the Minnesota Uprising in 1862-63. At the war's end he was mustered out of the Army of Fort Snelling, Minn. A year later he sought & obtained a commission in the Regular Army & was assigned to Fort Laramie, WY. The book contains many personal letters from General Custer, Grant, Sherman & others written to the Kidder family after Lyman's death. This book is a valuable contribution to our knowledge of the military frontier of the last century. It contains an introduction by John M.
