Popular British illustrator Edward Ardizzone (1900-1979) not only illustrated classics. As an official World War II artist, his pen and watercolor skteches from France, North Africa, Sicily and Italy are as emotionally moving as they are technically superb. Most of the art from his sketchbooks in this (illustrated booklet) that accompanied a centenary exhibition at the Ashmolean is previously unpublished. About his art, his daughter, Christianna, writes, "He drew at his desk all day, seated on his dais in the studio window, intent upon his work while family life, which was mostly lived in that large room, went noisily on around him; and he drew in the evenings and even during meals on any scap of paper which came to hand...for him drawing was the most precise and eloquent means of communication." (Ashmolean Museum)Wilson, Timothy is the author of 'Edward Ardizzone Ra 1900-1979 Ashmolean Museum, Oxford' with ISBN 9781854441447 and ISBN 1854441442.
