Carlton Plummer was born in Brunswick, on the coast of Maine. He graduated with honors from Vesper George School of Art in Boston. During the Korean War he served in Special Services as an army artist at Fort Jackson. He earned a BFA in Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art. Carlton became a high school art teacher and Director of Art Education in the Chelmsford, Massachusetts school system, where he developed a new art program. He matriculated in a master's degree program at Boston University, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Master of Fine Arts in Painting. He was assistant professor of painting at Lowell State College (later the University of Massachusetts at Lowell), and began conducting popular painting workshops around the East. Carlton was commissioned by the Department of Military Art to participate in the Army Combat Art program as a civilian painter. Twelve of his paintings hang in the permanent collection of the Museum of Military Art in Washington, D.C. Before he retired from the university in 1986, Carlton had achieved national acclaim, winning more than 150 national awards. He was elected to membership in the prestigious American Watercolor Society by his peers.
