John R. Rice was born in 1934 and received his Ph. D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1959. He came to Purdue University in 1964 as Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science. His early work was mostly in mathematics, but it gradually shifted to scientific computing. He was the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Transactions on Mathematical Software (1975-1993) and the citation for his 1994 election to the National Academy of Engineering was for "establishing and seminal contributions to the field of mathematical software."
