Tembisile "Chris" Hani was born in the Transkei in 1942 to poor, illiterate, Christian parents. An exceptionally bright student, he initially planned to become a priest but soon joined the ANC's guerrilla movement. He became general secretary of the South African Communist Party in 1991 and was assassinated in April 1993. Thenjiwe Mtintso fought alongside Chris Hani in the ANC's guerrilla movement in southern Africa.
