This report summarizes the findings from a 2004 survey of research centers and institutes at U.S. medical schools and universities. As biomedical research becomes more interdisciplinary, research centers and institutes are a common mechanism of organizing and facilitating basic and clinical investigations. But little is known about how centers and institutes work.
