Breaking the Chains is a full account of this Ukrainian unit and is set against a full discussion of the political background of the Ukraine, especially their nationalist movements of the post-World War I period. The oppressive policies of Reichskommissar Erich Koch, which eventually led to much anti-German feeling and the setting up of local partisan forces, are also discussed. It is this destructive policy by some, but certainly not all, German officials which the author argues was a major factor in the eventual German defeat. The book concludes with the immediate post-war agonies of the Ukrainian nationalist movement in the face of the horrific Stalinist dictatorship. All in all, this book constitutes a complete history of the Ukrainian involvement in World War II -- a story of tragedy, disappointment and, on the German side, what would appear to be gross stupidity.Caballero Jurado, Carlos is the author of 'Breaking the Chains 14 Waffen-Grenadier Division Der Ss and Other Ukrainian Volunteer Formations, Eastern Front, 1941-45' with ISBN 9781899765027 and ISBN 1899765026.
