Currently, there are no definitive pocket Urology reference guides on the market written specifically for Urology students, residents and trainees. While comprehensive textbooks are essential to the practice of Urology, equally essential are easy to use, readily accessible, straightforward manuals that students, residents, and trainees (and potentially even older urologists) may carry with them in their pockets or on PDAs. Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and General Surgery, among others, all have pocket reference manuals used ubiquitously by trainees in those respective specialties. Moreover, Hopkins produces the definitive trainee manual for at least two of these specialties (Pediatrics and Medicine). The authors have always been surprised by the lack of such manuals available to urologists. When Dr Parsons was still training as a resident, he worked at length constructing a format for a succinct Urology reference manual and collected extensive notes on important topics in Urology from various sources. By doing this, he was able to score in the 97th percentile on a national exam given to all Urology residents in the Unites States. In brief, this paperback manual of approximately 20-25 succinct chapters covers the most important topics in Urology. Emphasis would be placed on a straightforward presentation of practical knowledge and bedside skills. The manual would be written by Johns Hopkins Urology residents, under the supervision of the faculty, and would be marketed in connection with the Hopkins name (i.e. "The Brady Urology Manual", or something along those lines). Since many of my references for this first chapter are from British and German Urology centers of excellence we envision a broad appeal for this manual in Europe as well as the United States. There are, at any one time, over 800 Urology residents in the United States, with approximately 215 new Urology residents entering the field each year. There are also significant numbers of medical students, nurses, and older urologists who could potentially be part of a target market.Partin, Alan W. is the author of 'Brady Urology Manual', published 2006 under ISBN 9781841844817 and ISBN 1841844810.
