Jim Peterson was born in Augusta, Georgia, raised in North Augusta, South Carolina from the age of one, and has lived in Montana and Virginia. When not writing or teaching, he enjoys riding his motorcycle around the country and hiking in the mountains and deserts of the West. His fourth poetry collection, The Owning Stone, won The Benjamin Saltman Award and was published in 2000 by Red Hen Press. His poetry has been widely published in such journals as Poetry, Georgia Review, Shenandoah, and Prairie Schooner, and was awarded a 2002-2003 Poetry Fellowship by the Virginia Arts Commission. His first novel, Paper Crown, was published in 2005 by Red Hen.
