This book attempts to capture the magic of the world's greatest sites from the simple fossilized footprints of the first early humans to the unimaginable wealth of Tutankhamen's tomb and the extraordinary 7,000-strong 'Terracotta Army' that guarded China's first emperor, Qin Shih Huang Ti in his afterlife. The intention has been to cover all the major ancient and classical civilisations, looking in detail at specific sites which either typify or mark out a particular culture. Atlas of Archaeology focuses on the geographical aspects of archaeology, showing the precise locations of sites discussed in a clear map format and adding background information wherever possible. There is invariably bias toward Europe, North Africa and Asia because these are the areas that have been most thoroughly investigated and documented. For simplicity and ease of reference, the globe is divided into 12 separate regions, or specific political areas (such as the Greek and Roman Empires). Inevitably there is some overlapping.
