Can indigenous peoples secure the right to self-determination under international law? Although some concessions have been granted by territorial nation-states, this important question remains essentially unanswered, despite the significant advances in international human rights law during recent decades. Focusing on issues raised by the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Peoples, this study reveals the obstacles that lie in the way of self-determination for these peoples in all parts of the world. The author argues, using both legal & social theory, that the right of self-determination can & should be available to indigenous peoples, & proposes measures that the UN might institute to oversee the realization of this right.Lâm, Maivân Clech is the author of 'At the Edge of the State Indigenous Peoples and Self-Determination' with ISBN 9781571050762 and ISBN 1571050760.
