Ved Mehta was born in the city of Lahore, in British India, in 1934. He was educated at schools for the blind in Bombay and in Little Rock, Arkansas, and later Pomona College and Oxford and Harvard universities. From 1961 to 1994, he was a staff writer on the New Yorker magazine. His twenty-three books include excursions into fiction, classic accounts of modern India, where he has travelled extensively, and celebrated studies of his family in India and of Mahatma Gandhi. He has received numerous awards and honors, including two Guggenheim Fellowships and a MacArthur Prize Fellowship.
