Virginia Aten Pritchett was born and raised on a farm in western Illinois. After receiving a Bachelor of Education degree from Western Illinois University, she married and had three children. She later moved with her family to St. Louis and then to Maryland, where she began publishing poetry in various literary magazines. She entered a career in Social Work, receiving a Master's degree from the University of Maryland.
